I
Chapter One
Welcome to a World of Hospitality
Welcome to a World of Hospitality
I believe that life’s greatest joys are found in moments of discovery.
Meeting someone halfway around the world whose language you don’t speak, yet somehow discovering that smiles, hand gestures, and a little patience are all you need to understand each other.
Looking up at an architectural masterpiece and realizing you’re standing in the very same place where countless others stood centuries before you.
Taking a single bite of a dish so perfectly prepared that the conversation around you fades away and your only thought is, How have I lived this long without ever tasting this?
Watching the sun set beyond a distant mountain range, over an endless desert, or from the deck of a small ship, wishing the moment could last just a little longer.
Wandering through a bustling marketplace where the aromas, colors, and sounds awaken your senses and remind you just how wonderfully diverse our world truly is.
“These are the moments that stay with us. These are the moments that change us.”
Travel has shaped my life in countless ways, and I can’t imagine a greater privilege than helping others create experiences of their own.
Welcome. I’m delighted you’re here.
Whether someone shared my name with you, you discovered me through Virtuoso, or our paths crossed another way, thank you for taking the time to get to know me and learn more about how I work.
There’s no need to read everything in one sitting. Feel free to explore the chapters in whatever order interests you most and return whenever you’d like. My hope is that, by the end, you’ll have a genuine sense of who I am, how I approach travel planning, and what you can expect when we work together.
The greatest journeys start with a conversation. Not only about destinations, hotels, or flights, but about you. I want to understand how you like to travel, what inspires you, the pace that feels right, and the experiences you hope to have long before they become the memories you carry home. Those conversations become the foundation for every recommendation that follows.
For you, that’s where the dreaming begins. For me, that’s where the work begins.
From that moment forward, I’m working on your behalf, collaborating with hotel colleagues, destination specialists, cruise partners, luxury tour operators, concierges, and trusted professionals around the world to ensure every opportunity to enhance your experience has been explored.
That may mean securing an upgrade before you arrive, arranging a surprise anniversary celebration, communicating dietary preferences to the chef, requesting a favorite room location, or knowing exactly who to call when the unexpected happens. Most of that work is never seen by my clients. It’s reflected only in how effortlessly everything comes together.
Travel has the power to broaden our perspective, deepen our appreciation for other cultures, and help us experience a destination through its people, history, traditions, and cuisine. The most meaningful moments often feel spontaneous, even though they’re made possible by thoughtful preparation, trusted relationships, and people who genuinely care.
My role is to listen carefully, understand what matters most to you, advocate for your interests, and connect you with the people and places that can make your time away feel personal, meaningful, and unforgettable.
Throughout these chapters, you’ll discover the philosophy that has guided my entire career.
Hospitality.
To me, hospitality isn’t measured by the thread count of the sheets, the number of Michelin stars, or the grandeur of the lobby. It’s found in thoughtful gestures: a warm welcome after a long flight, a hotel manager who knows your name, a favorite bottle of wine waiting in your room, a guide who quickly becomes a friend, or a perfectly timed recommendation that becomes the highlight of your trip.
Those are the moments I remember.
Those are the moments I strive to create for every client.
The chapters that follow will give you a deeper understanding of how I work, what you can expect as my client, and why I believe trusted relationships and genuine hospitality make all the difference.
Most importantly, I hope they inspire you to dream a little bigger.
After all, the world’s most extraordinary journeys begin with a single question:
“Where do you dream of going?”
WARMLY,
John D. Powers

Chapter Two
After You
After You
Before we talk about destinations, hotels, cruises, or anything else, I’d like to understand what will make your journey truly unforgettable.
No two travelers are alike, which is why no two itineraries should be alike either. Before I recommend a destination, reserve a hotel, or begin building an itinerary, I want to understand how you like to travel, what inspires you, what gives you comfort, what makes you uncomfortable, and the kinds of experiences you’re hoping to have.
Some travelers love the energy of a grand hotel with multiple restaurants, lively gathering spaces, and a vibrant international atmosphere. Others are drawn to intimate boutique hotels where thoughtful design, local character, and a quieter atmosphere create a very different kind of luxury.
Some have always loved cruising. Others tell me they’ll never set foot on a cruise ship because they picture thousands of people waiting in buffet lines and fighting for pool chairs. Then they discover a luxury ship carrying just a few hundred guests, where spacious suites, exceptional cuisine, personalized service, and thoughtfully curated itineraries redefine everything they thought a cruise could be. For many, that first voyage marks the beginning of a lifelong appreciation for luxury cruising.
Some clients enjoy the camaraderie of small group touring and appreciate sharing memorable experiences with like-minded travelers. Others value complete privacy and prefer exploring with their own guide, driver, and vehicle, setting the pace entirely on their own. Some love changing hotels every few days to experience as much as possible, while others would rather unpack once, settle in, and immerse themselves in the local culture.
Your passions and preferences
As we begin planning together, I’ll want to understand everything from your passions to your preferences. Are you drawn to history, architecture, art, landscapes, cuisine, wine, wildlife, music, photography, or a particular sport? Do you feel most at home in the mountains, on the water, aboard a train winding through the countryside, or on a private boat exploring secluded coves? Do you enjoy wandering through neighborhood markets and boutiques, taking a cooking class, or spending an afternoon beside the pool with a good book?
Are you up with the sun, eager to make the most of every day, or do you prefer to linger over a leisurely breakfast before heading out? Are you happiest discovering local wines and spirits, or do you find comfort in familiar favorites? Do you enjoy meeting fellow travelers and exchanging stories over dinner, or is your ideal vacation one where it’s just you and the people you’ve chosen to travel with? Are you seeking adventure, relaxation, or perhaps the perfect balance of both?
The smallest details
Sometimes it’s the smallest details that make the biggest difference. Do you prefer a king bed or two queens? Feather pillows or foam? A soaking tub or an oversized walk-in shower? Ocean views, mountain vistas, or the excitement of a city skyline? Sparkling water or still? Dark chocolate or milk chocolate waiting in your room?
Special considerations
I’ll also want to know about any special considerations. If you’re afraid of heights, we won’t plan a hot-air balloon ride. If you don’t enjoy being on the water, we’ll skip scuba diving. Food allergies, mobility concerns, CPAP machines, connecting rooms, special celebrations, dietary preferences, every detail helps me create a journey that’s as comfortable as it is memorable.
“There are no right or wrong answers. Only your answers.”
The more I understand your interests, travel style, preferences, and budget, the better equipped I am to create an itinerary that feels as though it was designed exclusively for you.
Because it is.
In the next chapter, I’ll explain why working with a luxury travel advisor can make all the difference, not only in the experiences you’ll enjoy, but in the peace of mind you’ll have before, during, and after your journey.
III
Chapter Three
Beyond the Booking
Beyond the Booking
Anyone can reserve a hotel room. Anyone can book a cruise. Anyone can purchase an airline ticket. Today, nearly every destination in the world is only a few clicks away.
What cannot be booked online are trusted relationships.
Today’s traveler has access to thousands of websites, millions of online reviews, countless videos, blogs, forums, and social media influencers. Ironically, having more information has made choosing wisely far more difficult.
One hotel might have 4,000 five-star reviews. Another has 4,300. One traveler says it’s unforgettable. Another says they’ll never return.
Who do you believe?
My role isn’t to book what anyone can book. It’s to help you see beyond what everyone else sees.
Behind every exceptional travel experience are exceptional people. I spend my days speaking with General Managers, Sales Directors, Executive Chefs, Club Concierges, cruise executives, destination specialists, safari experts, luxury tour operators, and trusted hospitality professionals around the world. Those conversations provide insights no online review ever can.
Just as importantly, they allow me to match the right experience with the right traveler. The “best” hotel isn’t always the best hotel. It’s the hotel that’s best for you.
The same is true for cruise lines, safari lodges, tour operators, private guides, destinations, restaurants, and even the pace of an itinerary.
They share a common philosophy. They believe hospitality is deeply personal.
So do I.
When I recommend a hotel, cruise line, or another trusted colleague within my global network, it’s because I know the people behind the scenes. I understand how they care for their guests, and I know they will provide the same level of thoughtfulness, attention, and personal service that I provide throughout your journey.
That distinction is the difference between making a reservation and being genuinely welcomed.
Before you depart, I personally reach out to the people who will be caring for you throughout your journey. I share your preferences, let them know if you’re celebrating a special occasion, advocate on your behalf, and request every available courtesy and recognition to make your stay or journey even more memorable.
Those conversations begin well before you arrive and continue whenever needed throughout your travels. Should plans change unexpectedly, you have someone who already knows your itinerary, understands your priorities, and can immediately begin working with my trusted colleagues on your behalf.
The Power of Personal Advocacy
There’s a saying within the hospitality industry that perfectly captures what I do:
“You can’t VIP yourself.”
No matter how beautiful the hotel, how luxurious the cruise, or how exclusive the safari, hospitality is ultimately about people taking care of people.
The most memorable travel experiences aren’t created because someone booked the most expensive suite. They’re created because someone behind the scenes knew you were coming, understood what mattered to you, and genuinely wanted your stay to be exceptional.
That’s my role. I’m your advocate before you arrive, your representative while you’re traveling, and if something unexpected happens, someone in your corner every step of the way.
Just as importantly, I’ll also tell you when something isn’t worth your investment. Not every hotel deserves its reputation. Not every suite represents good value. Not every destination is at its best year round.
My responsibility isn’t to help you spend more.
It’s to help you travel better.
That philosophy guides every recommendation I make.
The Strength Behind the Relationships
One of the many advantages of those relationships is access to valuable privileges through my affiliation with McCabe World Travel, Virtuoso, and many of the world’s leading luxury travel programs.
JD Powers Travel is an independent affiliate of McCabe World Travel, my host agency and a global leader in luxury travel. Founded in Washington, D.C. in 1989, McCabe has been a member of Virtuoso since 1995 and has consistently been recognized as one of the network’s top producing agencies. Its founder, Damian McCabe, has also served as Chairman of Virtuoso’s Member Advisory Board.
Virtuoso is the industry’s leading global luxury travel network, connecting its member agencies and advisors with more than 2,000 of the world’s finest hotels, cruise lines, tour operators, airlines, and destination partners. These relationships provide access to an extraordinary global community of hospitality professionals, along with preferred amenities, recognition, and experiences that aren’t always available when booking independently.
Together, McCabe World Travel and Virtuoso give my independent business the reach, relationships, and influence of a much larger global luxury travel organization, while allowing me to provide the highly personal service and individual attention that define JD Powers Travel.
Depending on the partner and availability, these benefits may include:
- Accommodation upgrades
- Daily breakfast for two
- Hotel or resort credits
- Early check-in
- Late check-out
- Complimentary Wi-Fi
- Priority waitlist status
- Shipboard credits
- Exclusive experiences
- A personalized welcome or gift from the General Manager
and other valuable amenities
Those privileges certainly enhance the overall experience, but I hope you’ll come to see them as the icing on the cake rather than the reason to work with me.
The true value lies in the trusted relationships, personal advocacy, and quiet work that happens behind the scenes, much of which you’ll never see but will certainly experience.
IV
Chapter Four
The Art of Journey Design
Thoughtfully designed. Personally managed.
The Art of Journey Design
Some vacations require little more than a reservation. A long weekend in New York, a week at a favorite resort, or a cruise you’ve already selected can often be confirmed with relatively little planning.
Other vacations are altogether different.
Perhaps you’re envisioning three weeks exploring Spain by train, a honeymoon through Italy and Greece, an African safari followed by Cape Town, Japan during cherry blossom season, or a river cruise paired with several days before and afterward. Maybe you’re coordinating a milestone celebration involving multiple generations arriving from different parts of the world, each with different interests, schedules, and expectations.
These journeys require far more than reservations. They require thoughtful design.
Creating a custom itinerary means considering not only where you want to go, but how the entire journey should unfold. Pacing, routing, accommodations, transportation, private touring, dining, special experiences, and time to relax must all work together. Each decision affects the next, and the goal is to create an experience that feels natural rather than overplanned.
Every Decision Has a Purpose
Consider a two-week journey through Italy.
At first glance, the itinerary appears straightforward: Rome, Florence, Tuscany, and the Amalfi Coast. Yet almost immediately, the planning becomes far more nuanced. Should you arrive in Rome and depart from Naples, or would the journey flow more naturally in the opposite direction? Would another night in Tuscany allow for a slower pace, even if it meant spending less time on the coast? Is the train itself part of the experience, or would a private driver create opportunities to visit hill towns, vineyards, and landscapes that most travelers pass by?
The same consideration extends to the experiences along the way. A Michelin-starred restaurant may be the perfect choice for one couple celebrating a milestone anniversary, while another might treasure an evening at a family-owned trattoria where dinner unfolds over several leisurely hours and the owner insists on pouring one final glass of wine before saying goodnight. Some travelers appreciate days rich with private touring, while others want time built into the itinerary to wander, relax, and make discoveries of their own.
There is rarely one correct answer. There is only the answer that is most appropriate for the people taking the journey. That is why no two itineraries I create are ever exactly alike.
Collaboration Refines the Experience
Once we’ve identified the destination, the types of experiences you’re looking for, your budget, and the overall direction of the journey, I begin working with my trusted colleagues around the world to help frame the itinerary.
Their insight helps determine how the trip should come together from the outset. A destination specialist may suggest the ideal sequence of cities, a General Manager may flag a special event worth planning around, a private guide may recommend the best time of day to visit a major site, and a Club Concierge may point us toward a restaurant or experience that would never have surfaced through ordinary research.
From there, the itinerary takes form through an ongoing exchange of ideas, recommendations, and refinements. What ultimately appears on the page is the result of that collaboration, with each decision considered in the context of the trip as a whole.
Knowing When Less Creates More
One of the most valuable recommendations I can make is often the most difficult for an excited traveler to hear: slow down.
It’s entirely natural to want to experience as much as possible, especially when visiting a destination you’ve dreamed about for years. Vacations are precious, and everyone wants to make the most of their time away. Yet the trips clients remember most are rarely the ones with the longest list of attractions or the greatest number of hotel stays. More often, they’re the ones that allowed time to linger over lunch, return to a favorite café, enjoy an unhurried afternoon by the pool, or discover an unexpected neighborhood.
Sometimes the best decision is to spend another night in one destination rather than add another city. Sometimes it’s choosing a beautiful room instead of the largest suite and directing that investment toward an experience you’ll value more. Sometimes it’s recognizing that an unscheduled afternoon deserves a place in the itinerary every bit as much as a private tour.
One of my responsibilities is helping you make those decisions with confidence. My goal has never been to help you spend more. It’s to help you travel better.
Designing With Flexibility
No matter how carefully an itinerary is planned, travel has a way of surprising us. Weather changes, flights are delayed, opening hours shift, and events appear that weren’t on anyone’s calendar when planning began.
A well-designed itinerary accounts for that reality. It has enough structure to provide purpose and enough flexibility that one change doesn’t disrupt everything that follows. Good pacing also leaves room to embrace an unexpected opportunity rather than feeling bound to a schedule created months earlier.
The best itinerary isn’t the one that controls every hour. It’s the one that gives you confidence in the plan while leaving enough room for travel to work its magic.
A Journey Worth Remembering
Years from now, I don’t believe you’ll remember every transfer, reservation, or carefully coordinated detail. You’ll remember how the journey made you feel.
Perhaps it will be standing quietly as the sun rises over an ancient city, listening to a guide whose stories bring centuries of history to life, sharing an unforgettable dinner overlooking the sea, discovering a hidden courtyard by chance, or enjoying an afternoon that unfolded with no agenda at all.
Those are the moments that stay with us, and they’re often the easiest to miss when an itinerary becomes a race from one attraction to the next.
The purpose of journey design is not to help you see as much as possible. It’s to create the rhythm, opportunities, and freedom that allow you to experience a destination more deeply.
That, to me, is the difference between taking a vacation and creating memories that remain with you for a lifetime.
A Shared Commitment
Designing an extraordinary journey is a collaborative process. From our first conversation, we are making a commitment to one another. You are trusting me with your time, your investment, and your travel dreams. In return, I am committing my experience, creativity, global relationships, and personal attention to creating an itinerary that reflects not only where you wish to go, but how you wish to experience it.
That shared commitment allows us to explore possibilities rather than settle for the obvious and to make decisions based on what is genuinely best for you.
For custom itineraries, I ask clients to make a professional planning investment. It is not a fee for making reservations. It recognizes the substantial professional work that begins well before anything is booked and continues throughout the planning and management of your travels.
Long before your itinerary is finalized, hours have been devoted to developing the route, consulting with partners, evaluating alternatives, refining recommendations, and coordinating the details required to bring everything together.
As we all know, life happens. Priorities change, unexpected circumstances arise, and even the most carefully planned vacations sometimes need to be postponed or canceled. By that point, however, the professional time, creativity, and expertise devoted to designing the itinerary have already been invested. The planning investment recognizes that work and allows me to approach every custom journey with the same level of care and commitment from the beginning, regardless of how circumstances ultimately unfold.
It also allows me to limit the number of comprehensive planning projects I accept at any given time. Rather than dividing my attention among as many itineraries as possible, I can devote the time each client deserves and remain closely engaged as the journey evolves.
This investment creates a genuine partnership. You are investing in the experience we’re creating, and I am investing my time, judgment, relationships, and personal attention in bringing it to life.
What Your Journey Design Includes
Every journey is different, so the services involved will reflect what we’re creating together. Your Custom Journey Design Investment covers my professional planning and management from our initial conversations through your return home, including:
- Discovery and consultation
- Destination, routing, and itinerary development
- Hotel, resort, cruise, villa, and tour recommendations
- Accommodation and room category selection
- Collaboration with destination partners and local experts
- Private guides, touring, experiences, and activities
- Airport transfers and ground transportation
- Restaurant recommendations and reservations
- Air travel guidance and coordination
- Travel protection guidance
- Reservation management and payment deadlines
- Ongoing itinerary refinement
- Communication of preferences, celebrations, and special requests
- Preferred partner benefits and VIP recognition
- Pre-departure review and preparation
- Personal advocacy throughout your travels
- Assistance while you’re traveling
- Post-travel follow-up
Not every journey will require every service on this list, while others will involve considerably more. The investment isn’t based on the number of reservations I make. It allows me to take responsibility for the journey as a whole and manage everything we’ve chosen to include from beginning to end.
The Custom Journey Design Investment
Every custom itinerary is unique, and so is the amount of time required to create it. Rather than charging by the hour, I prefer a clear investment that reflects the scope of the planning relationship.
When multiple parties are traveling together from the outset, much of the planning is shared. While each party has its own reservations, preferences, and logistics to coordinate, everyone is following the same overall itinerary. The additional investment recognizes the extra time required to manage those individual arrangements within the trip we’re already creating together.
If another couple, family, or traveling party decides to join after the itinerary has already been designed, the process is very different. Accommodations may need to be reevaluated, availability reconfirmed, transportation adjusted, activities modified, and existing arrangements revisited to incorporate the additional travelers. At that stage, the work essentially becomes a new planning process.
For that reason, parties joining after planning has begun are treated as a separate custom itinerary and are subject to the standard $1,000 Custom Journey Design Investment.
Most of the custom journeys I design fall between $15,000 and $75,000, although the possibilities in luxury travel extend far beyond that. A private villa for an extended family, buying out an intimate boutique hotel for a milestone celebration, chartering a private aircraft or yacht, or even reserving an entire private island with its resort and residences exclusively for your family and friends can easily bring the investment to $250,000 or more for a single week.
When viewed in the context of the journey as a whole, the $1,000 Custom Journey Design Investment represents a relatively modest portion of the overall trip cost. In return, you’re gaining my experience and expertise, the peace of mind that comes from having one person overseeing the journey from beginning to end, and the insider access, trusted relationships, recognition, and personal advocacy my affiliations and global network help unlock.
The planning investment is payable before work begins and marks the beginning of our shared commitment to the journey.
The Promise
When you finally arrive at your destination, my hope is that you won’t be thinking about the countless decisions behind your itinerary. You won’t be wondering whether you chose the right hotel, guide, pace, or route. Those choices will already have been thoughtfully considered with your best interests at the center of them.
Instead, your attention can be exactly where it belongs: watching the sun rise from your balcony, sailing into a secluded cove, standing before a masterpiece you’ve dreamed of seeing for years, savoring a meal you’ll talk about long after you’ve returned home, or discovering a quiet street, hidden beach, or neighborhood café that becomes one of your favorite memories.
If I’ve done my job well, you won’t be thinking about the planning at all.
“You’ll be living it.”
To me, that’s the true measure of a beautifully designed journey.
V
Chapter Five
Reservations Only
Hotels, Cruises & Standalone Reservations
Reservations Only
Sometimes all you need is the perfect reservation.
Not every vacation requires a custom-designed itinerary.
Sometimes you’ve already decided exactly where you’d like to stay, which cruise you’d like to sail, or which guided journey you’d like to experience. In those situations, you don’t need me to design your travels from the ground up. You want an experienced advisor to secure the reservation, represent your interests, and help you receive the greatest possible value from your investment.
For these straightforward reservations, there is no Custom Journey Design Investment. My objective is to build lasting relationships with my clients, not to evaluate every reservation transactionally.
Where We Begin
Every client begins in a different place, and I’m happy to meet you wherever you are.
You know where you'd like to go but aren't sure where to stay or how you'd like to experience it.
Tell me your destination, travel dates, and budget, and I’ll recommend the hotel or resort I believe best matches your travel style, priorities, and expectations. If you’re considering a cruise but haven’t selected a cruise line or sailing, I’ll help you evaluate the options and recommend the one I believe is the best fit for you.
You've already selected the hotel or cruise.
Wonderful. Send me the details, and I’ll secure the reservation through the preferred partner program that provides the greatest overall value.
You've already made the reservation yourself.
Depending on the supplier’s policies and the type of rate you’ve reserved, I may still be able to assist. In some cases, I’m able to have an existing reservation transferred to my agency while preserving your reservation and extending preferred partner benefits. Reservations booked with loyalty points, group rates, wholesale packages, or third-party booking websites generally aren’t eligible, but it’s always worth asking.
However, I encourage clients to allow me to make the reservation from the very beginning. Doing so provides the greatest opportunity to maximize your benefits and allows me to begin representing your interests immediately.
After the Reservation Is Confirmed
Once your reservation is confirmed, my work doesn’t end with a confirmation number. Well before your arrival, I personally reach out to my partners who will be welcoming you. I tell them about you, share your preferences, communicate any special occasions you’re celebrating, and discuss opportunities for enhancements such as a room upgrade, along with anything else that will help ensure your experience feels personal from the moment you arrive.
Depending upon the property or travel partner, your reservation includes valuable preferred partner benefits such as daily breakfast, room upgrades, hotel or shipboard credits, early check-in, late check-out, complimentary Wi-Fi, welcome amenities, and other exclusive privileges.
Perhaps more importantly, your reservation begins with a personal introduction rather than arriving as another anonymous booking.
For many clients, that’s all they need. They’re perfectly comfortable managing online check-in, restaurant reservations, shore excursions, spa appointments, and other details themselves.
If, however, you’d like me to remain actively involved after the reservation has been made by coordinating airport transfers, private guides, restaurant reservations, pre- and post-stay hotels, monitoring cruise promotions or fare reductions, selecting shore excursions, arranging transportation, or managing the many details that accompany a cruise or more complex itinerary, those services become part of my Custom Journey Design service described in the previous chapter.
Preferred Partnerships
Through McCabe World Travel, Virtuoso, and my broader global travel network, I have access to preferred partnerships with many of the world’s finest hotels, resorts, cruise lines, and travel companies. These relationships allow me to secure reservations through the partnership program that provides the greatest overall value, while opening the door to benefits, recognition, and opportunities that may not be available when reserving independently.
Hotels
Whether you’re reserving a cosmopolitan city hotel, a secluded island resort, a mountain retreat, or an intimate boutique property, I work with many of the world’s most respected hospitality brands and their preferred advisor programs, including:
- Aman Resorts
- Four Seasons Preferred Partner
- Rosewood Elite
- Belmond Bellini Club
- Mandarin Oriental Fan Club
- Rocco Forte Knights
- Hyatt Privé
- Auberge Resorts Collection
- Marriott STARS & Luminous
- PenClub
- Accor Hera
- Leading Hotels of the World VIP
- Small Luxury Hotels withIN
- Relais & Châteaux
- Hilton for Luxury
- IHG Destined
- Preferred Hotels & Resorts
and many others
Cruises
My preferred partnerships extend across luxury ocean voyages, intimate yachts, river cruises, and expedition travel. Among the exceptional cruise partners I work with are:
- Four Seasons Yachts
- Aman at Sea
- The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection
- Silversea
- Seabourn
- Regent Seven Seas Cruises
- Explora Journeys
- Crystal
- SeaDream Yacht Club
- Oceania Cruises
- Uniworld Boutique River Cruises
- AmaWaterways
- Viking
- Windstar Cruises
- Virgin Voyages
among many others
Villas, Safaris, Rail Journeys & Guided Tours
The same Reservation Services apply when you’ve already selected a private villa, safari lodge, luxury rail journey, expedition, or guided tour.
I’ll secure every available preferred partner privilege through my agency and travel network.
Regardless of where you’re staying, sailing, or exploring, these relationships allow me to do far more than simply place a reservation. They connect your travels to a distinguished global network of hospitality partners and preferred programs, creating opportunities for additional benefits and ensuring that the people responsible for your experience know you are personally represented by me.
When Comparing Value
From time to time, a client will find a hotel they love, a cruise they’d like to sail, or a tour or safari they’d like to experience and ask whether I have access to the same rate or fare they’ve seen online. I’m always happy to explore the options available through my agency and preferred partner relationships and determine what I can offer.
When I do, I look beyond price alone. A lower rate isn’t necessarily the better value once possible room or suite upgrades, daily breakfast, hotel or resort credits, early check-in and late check-out, welcome amenities, onboard credits, room or cabin considerations, personalized recognition, and my advocacy behind the scenes are taken into account. Occasionally, however, a hotel, cruise line, or tour operator may offer a promotional rate through another channel that I cannot replicate. I’ll always be transparent when that’s the case and help you understand the differences so you can make an informed decision.
My Reservation Services do not carry a planning investment because they’re designed for clients who simply need my assistance selecting and securing a standalone hotel, cruise, tour, safari, or other reservation, without the additional planning and coordination of a Custom Journey Design. Behind even a seemingly simple booking can be time spent researching rates and promotions, comparing options, communicating with my partners, and determining which opportunity provides the greatest overall value. I happily invest that time as part of our client-advisor relationship, with the understanding that we’re working together in good faith toward a reservation that I’ll ultimately secure and manage on your behalf.
If your preference is instead to gather options from several sources before deciding where or how you’d like to book, I’m happy to work that way as well. In those situations, where my role is primarily research and comparison rather than securing the reservation, my time can be engaged at $250 per hour.
This allows me to provide the same thoughtful research and professional guidance while giving you complete freedom to book whichever option you ultimately choose.
The distinction is simply one of how we’re working together. When I’m handling your reservation, my research and advocacy are included as part of our client-advisor relationship, with no additional fee. When you’re seeking my expertise and research while retaining the option to book elsewhere, that work is provided on an hourly basis.
My goal is never simply to find the lowest price. It’s to help you understand the complete picture, identify the best overall value, and make choices that will ultimately lead to a better travel experience.
Whether your travels begin with a single hotel reservation, an ocean voyage, a safari, or a fully customized itinerary, my commitment remains the same: to look after your interests and help make every journey the very best it can be.
VI
Chapter Six
In Good Hands
Luxury Tours, Safaris & Expeditions
In Good Hands
Exceptional journeys begin with exceptional people.
Some journeys call for more than a beautiful hotel and a thoughtfully planned itinerary. They require extraordinary guides, deep destination knowledge, complex logistics, or access developed through years of experience on the ground.
Whether you’re tracing ancient civilizations through Egypt, cycling through the rice terraces and villages of Vietnam, golfing Scotland’s legendary courses, traveling aboard an iconic train through the Canadian Rockies, discovering the wildlife and landscapes of the Galápagos, or exploring the cultural treasures of India, the company you choose can profoundly shape the journey.
That’s why I’m highly selective about the travel partners I recommend.
The Right Partner for the Journey
There are thousands of companies offering tours around the world. My role is not to present you with an endless list of choices. It’s to understand the experience you’re seeking and connect you with the partner I believe is best suited to deliver it.
Among the outstanding companies I work with are:
- Abercrombie & Kent
- Tauck
- Micato Safaris
- Blue Parallel
- Butterfield & Robinson
- DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co.
- Backroads
- National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions
- Railbookers Group
- Adventures in Golf
- Ski.com
and many others
This is only a sampling. Through McCabe World Travel, Virtuoso, and my own relationships, I have access to an extensive global network of luxury tour operators, destination specialists, expedition companies, guides, outfitters, and local experts.
Two journeys can look similar on paper yet feel entirely different once you’re there. Group size, pacing, accommodations, guides, dining, transportation, access, level of activity, and style of service all matter. I look beyond the itinerary itself to determine which company and experience are right for you.
The People Who Bring a Journey to Life
Even the most beautifully designed itinerary is only as good as the people who deliver it.
An exceptional guide can make the ruins of an ancient civilization come alive. A gifted naturalist can reveal an entire world you might otherwise walk past. An expedition leader can make an unfamiliar landscape suddenly meaningful. The finest guides do far more than recite information. They create a connection between you and the places you’re experiencing.
The companies I recommend understand this. They have spent years assembling exceptional teams of guides and local experts, building deep knowledge of the places they serve, and perfecting the experiences they create for their guests.
When I recommend one of these partners, I’m placing my professional reputation behind that recommendation.
The Value of Representation
There’s another important advantage to booking these journeys through me: representation carries weight.
The world’s leading tour operators have longstanding relationships with professional travel advisors and agencies such as McCabe World Travel. They know that when we entrust a client to them, we’re also making a decision about where we will entrust future clients.
That creates leverage.
Having my agency attached to your reservation tells the tour operator that you’re not arriving as an isolated transaction. You’re a client being personally entrusted to them through a professional relationship they value. They know that taking exceptional care of you helps strengthen that relationship and gives them the opportunity to earn more of my agency’s business in the future.
That distinction can matter in ways that never appear on an itinerary. It can influence which hotel rooms are assigned, which guides are selected, how special requests are handled, and the level of VIP recognition you receive throughout the journey. I want my partners looking at your reservation and thinking, “These are John’s clients. Let’s take especially good care of them.”
What I bring is the weight of the relationships behind your reservation and a compelling reason for my partners to go above and beyond on your behalf.
It’s one of the less visible advantages of working with a well-connected travel advisor, but it can be one of the most valuable.
A Journey That’s Already Designed
Many of these companies offer extraordinary scheduled journeys that have been developed and refined over years. If you’ve already selected one and would like me to reserve it for you, there is no Custom Journey Design Investment.
You receive the expertise of the company operating the journey, while your reservation also carries the representation of my agency and the relationships behind it.
Some companies work exclusively through professional travel advisors. Others accept direct reservations but place considerable importance on their advisor partnerships. Either way, there’s no advantage to removing that additional layer of representation by booking directly.
Make It Your Own
An established tour can also become the centerpiece of a much larger vacation.
You might spend a few days in London before joining a journey through the English countryside, continue from a cycling adventure in Vietnam to a beach retreat in Thailand, add Buenos Aires to an Antarctic expedition, or follow a cultural journey through Morocco with a few restorative days along the Mediterranean coast.
When you’d like me to design the travel surrounding the tour, including international air, hotels before or afterward, airport transfers, private guides, restaurant reservations, additional destinations, or other experiences, that broader planning becomes part of my Custom Journey Design service.
The tour provides the foundation. Together, we make the entire journey your own.
The Measure of a Great Partnership
Choosing the right tour operator is about more than comparing itineraries. It’s about choosing the people you’ll trust with your time, your investment, and some of the most memorable days of your life.
My role is to know whom I trust with that responsibility and to make sure they know exactly whose client they’re caring for.
It bears repeating...
“You can’t VIP yourself.”
When the right company, the right people, and the right relationships come together, an exceptional itinerary has the opportunity to become something even better: an exceptional experience.

Taking Flight
Taking Flight
Air travel is often one of the most important components of an exceptional journey.
It’s also one of the most complex.
Airlines, aircraft, seating configurations, connection times, fare rules, schedule changes, customs and immigration requirements, airline lounges and elite benefits, and loyalty programs can all have a significant impact on your overall travel experience.
That’s why McCabe World Travel maintains a dedicated Air Department staffed by experienced airline specialists whose sole focus is arranging premium air travel.
Premium Air Services
To provide the highest level of expertise, I work closely with McCabe World Travel’s Air Department, which specializes exclusively in First Class, Business Class, and Premium Economy travel.
Together, we’ll recommend the most efficient routing, evaluate aircraft and cabin configurations, coordinate complex international itineraries, and help maximize the value of your airline loyalty programs.
Whether your itinerary involves a simple nonstop flight or a multi-city international journey, you’ll benefit from specialists whose expertise is focused entirely on premium air travel.
Airfare as Part of Your Journey
Air travel is designed to complement the journeys I create for my clients.
For that reason, I arrange airfare only when I’m coordinating another significant travel component on your behalf, such as a hotel, cruise, tour, safari, villa, or other principal reservation. This allows me to coordinate your flights with hotel arrivals, cruise embarkations, rail departures, private transfers, guided touring, and every other element of your itinerary so everything works together naturally.
Many of my clients choose to redeem airline miles or points for their flights. Those reservations require access to your personal airline loyalty account, so you’ll make those bookings directly with the airline. I’m always happy to review your itinerary and offer guidance on schedules, connection times, airport choices, and other considerations to help ensure your flights integrate smoothly with the rest of your travels.
My air travel services are reserved for clients whose broader travel arrangements I am also handling, rather than for standalone airline ticketing requests.
Air Service Fee
Every itinerary is researched and ticketed by McCabe World Travel’s dedicated Air Department, and a professional air service fee of $100 per booking applies.
This fee reflects the expertise involved in evaluating routing options, coordinating schedules, managing ticketing, and providing professional support throughout your travels.
A thoughtfully planned journey doesn’t begin when you arrive at your destination. It begins the moment you leave home.
By coordinating your flights with the rest of your itinerary, I can help minimize unnecessary stress, reduce connection concerns, and create a smoother travel experience from departure through your return home.
Every part of your travels should reflect the same level of care, expertise, and attention to detail. That includes the flights that get you there.

Chapter Eight
Protecting Your Investment
Protecting Your Investment
No matter how carefully a journey is planned, life has a way of surprising us. Flights are delayed, weather changes, luggage goes astray, illnesses and injuries occur, and natural disasters can interrupt even the most carefully considered itinerary. For that reason, I strongly encourage every client to consider comprehensive travel protection.
Travel Insurance (Protection)
Travel insurance is about much more than recovering the cost of a canceled trip. Depending upon the policy you choose, coverage may extend to medical emergencies, emergency medical evacuation, trip interruption, travel delays, lost or delayed baggage, missed connections, and other unforeseen circumstances.
Many travelers assume these situations are unlikely until they experience one themselves. Having the right coverage can make an enormous difference during an already stressful situation.
Choosing the Right Coverage
Every journey carries different considerations, and the appropriate protection should reflect the nature of the trip. A Caribbean cruise may call for different coverage than an African safari, an expedition to Antarctica, a ski vacation, or an extended journey through Europe.
Understanding those differences is an important part of determining which coverage makes sense for your travels.
How Travel Protection Fits Into My Services
Because policies, coverage options, exclusions, and claims can be complex, the level of assistance I provide depends upon the travel services we’re arranging together.
When travel protection is incorporated into a Custom Journey Design, I’ll help evaluate the available options, recommend coverage appropriate for your itinerary, and coordinate that component as part of the overall planning process.
If you’re reserving a hotel, cruise, villa, safari, tour, or another standalone reservation, I’m happy to recommend one of my trusted travel protection partners and provide the information you need to purchase coverage directly.
Existing Coverage
Some travelers already have travel protection through premium credit cards or other insurance policies. As part of my Custom Journey Design service, I’m happy to review those benefits with you so we have a better understanding of what may already be covered and where additional protection may be appropriate.
My Recommendation
While travel protection is always optional, I rarely recommend traveling without it. Comprehensive coverage often represents roughly 10% of the overall cost of a journey, although the actual premium will vary based upon the travelers, itinerary, and coverage selected.
To put that into perspective, if you’ve invested $50,000 in a remarkable vacation, spending approximately $5,000 to help protect that investment is, in my opinion, well worth considering when the alternative could be losing a substantial portion, or potentially all, of what you’ve already paid if something serious and unexpected prevents you from traveling.
After investing significant time, money, and anticipation into an exceptional journey, I believe protecting that investment can provide tremendous peace of mind. My goal is not only to help you create an unforgettable vacation, but to help you travel with confidence from the day you depart until the day you return home.

Chapter Nine
The Journey That Brought Me Here
The Journey That Brought Me Here
People often ask how I became a luxury travel advisor. The truth is, there wasn’t one defining moment, one destination, one career decision, or one journey that suddenly revealed what I was meant to do.
Instead, it was a lifetime shaped by curiosity, hospitality, remarkable people, unforgettable meals, extraordinary places, and experiences that gradually transformed the way I see the world. Looking back, I think that journey began long before I ever owned a passport.
When my mother was nineteen years old, she moved to Paris to attend art school. That experience forever broadened her perspective on art, fashion, food, culture, and the world itself. She returned home with a greater appreciation for different cultures and ways of life, and that openness to the world eventually became part of the home she and my father created together.
My parents raised my two older sisters and me in an environment where confidence, kindness, and an eagerness to experience something new were part of everyday life. We were encouraged to ask questions, embrace new experiences, live by the Golden Rule, and follow our hearts wherever they might lead.
Our dinner table reflected that spirit. My mother introduced us to foods that many families around us had never experienced. Long before I boarded an airplane, every unfamiliar ingredient and new recipe she prepared became my first introduction to other cultures. I didn’t realize it then, but she was quietly teaching me that the world was much bigger than the one outside our front door.
Home for lunch
One of my favorite childhood memories seems almost unimaginable today. Our home was only a couple of blocks from my elementary school. I never cared for cafeteria lunches, and I wasn’t particularly fond of taking a cold lunch from home either, so my parents arranged something rather unconventional. Beginning in second grade, I was given permission to ride my bicycle home every day for lunch.
For the next five years, that became my routine. Depending on what was in the kitchen, lunch might be leftover steamed artichokes with hot butter and lemon, tuna-filled crêpes with a cheesy-celery sauce, or roast beef gravy over toast. Other days, I’d make myself a hamburger. Before leaving for school some mornings, I’d place a frozen dinner in the oven and set the timer so it would begin cooking about forty minutes before I arrived home. I’d return to a hot lunch waiting for me.
Looking back, I realize my parents weren’t just solving a lunchtime problem. They trusted me and encouraged me to think for myself, solve problems, and become comfortable taking care of myself from an early age. At the time, it felt normal. Today, I recognize how much those lessons in confidence, independence, and a willingness to try something new influenced nearly everything that followed.
Those qualities eventually carried me far beyond Arkansas.
My family also spent every summer at our cottage on the shores of Lake Michigan in Ludington, Michigan, and we still do. Every summer we return to the same place, reconnect with lifelong friends, welcome familiar neighbors back for another season, and continue traditions that have become woven into the fabric of our lives.
Growing up, I assumed everyone experienced summers this way. Only later did I realize how extraordinary it truly was. Lake Michigan taught me that travel isn’t always about discovering somewhere new. Sometimes it’s about returning to a place that restores you, to friendships that have endured for decades, and to the people who remind you exactly who you are.
Today, my wife Catherine and I continue that tradition by spending several months each summer on Lake Michigan, returning to a place that has been part of my life since childhood.
The World Begins to Open
At twenty-four years old, I left Arkansas and moved to Hilton Head, where my career in hospitality began. One year later, three close friends and I embarked on a four-month journey around the world that would forever change the course of my life.
Looking back now, I realize it wasn’t just a trip. It was the beginning of an education that continues to influence the way I see the world and the way I care for every client to this day. The world had begun to open, and I had no idea how much it was about to teach me.
One of the greatest privileges of working in hospitality was access to a reciprocal employee travel program that offered extraordinary rates at affiliated hotels around the world. During our four-month journey, those rates allowed us to stay at many remarkable properties for just twenty five dollars per room, per night. Most evenings, the four of us shared one room with two queen beds, meaning our accommodations often cost little more than six dollars per person.
Those savings gave us something far more valuable than discounted hotel rooms: they gave us the freedom to say yes. Yes to extraordinary restaurants and memorable wines. Yes to flights that weren’t included in our around the world ticket. Yes to adventures we never imagined we’d have. In Australia alone, we spent one unforgettable week whitewater rafting, zip lining, snorkeling, scuba diving, and skydiving.
Some nights we checked into magnificent luxury hotels; other nights we found ourselves in modest hostels or family run inns. Looking back, I’m grateful for both. The grand hotels taught me about excellence. The smaller places taught me about humanity. Together, they showed me that memorable hospitality isn’t defined by a room rate. It’s defined by the people who create the experience.
An afternoon at the Ritz Paris
One of my earliest lessons came in Paris. Before we left home, my father made us an offer: if we could somehow secure a lunch reservation at the Ritz Paris, he would treat all four of us. My parents had dined there a few years earlier during my mother’s first trip back to Paris since attending art school and my father’s first visit to Europe. Knowing how meaningful that experience had been for them made the invitation even more special.
Much to our surprise, we managed to secure a reservation. When we arrived at the Ritz Paris, we were greeted by the hotel’s distinguished maître d’, Monsieur Dumonnet.
We were all wearing khakis and long sleeved shirts, the nicest clothes we had packed for our entire journey. Jackets, however, were required in the dining room. For just a brief moment, there was an awkward pause as Monsieur Dumonnet looked us over. Then his expression softened into a warm smile.
Rather than drawing attention to the situation, he quietly escorted us to a nearby wardrobe, selected jackets for each of us, and personally led us to our table. Looking back at the photographs still makes me laugh. Mark’s jacket hung several inches below his fingertips, while John’s barely reached his wrists. They probably should have switched. None of us cared. We felt incredibly fortunate to be there.
From that moment forward, we were treated not like four young Americans seeing the Ritz Paris for the first time, but like honored guests. The menu was entirely in French, and none of the servers spoke English. Monsieur Dumonnet patiently translated every course, answered every question, offered recommendations, and quietly watched over our table throughout the next four hours.
We enjoyed magnificent Champagne, beautiful Bordeaux, and an extraordinary meal that introduced us to the elegance and artistry of French cuisine, followed by digestifs to linger over as the afternoon drew to a close. It remains one of the most memorable meals of my life. Yet when I think back on that afternoon, I don’t remember a particular dish or vintage nearly as vividly as I remember Monsieur Dumonnet: his warmth, his grace, his professionalism, and his remarkable ability to make four young Americans feel as though they belonged.
“That afternoon taught me something I have never forgotten: luxury isn’t defined by crystal chandeliers, polished silver, or Michelin stars. It’s defined by how someone makes you feel.”
A few weeks later, after arriving in Athens, our group decided to split up. Bill and I boarded a cruise, while John and Mark decided to explore several Greek islands by ferry. Our plan was to reunite in Istanbul about a week later.
Nature had other plans.
A powerful storm destroyed the ferry dock on the island where John and Mark were staying, and one night unexpectedly became six. A local family welcomed them into their home while they waited for ferry service to resume. Each evening they gathered around the family’s dinner table, sharing homemade Greek specialties, local wines poured from pitchers, after dinner liqueurs, and conversations that transcended language. During the day, they borrowed the family’s scooter, explored the island, read books, played cards, and settled into a rhythm of life they never could have planned.
Whenever they asked what they owed, the family smiled and told them not to worry. When ferry service finally resumed and it was time to leave, John and Mark nervously asked once more what they owed for their stay. The gentleman thought for a moment and quoted a price that amounted to roughly $35. They couldn’t believe it, and neither could I when they later shared the story with us.
John and Mark continued through the Greek islands and eventually on to Ephesus before we finally reunited in Istanbul, more than two weeks after we had last seen each other.
Their experience has stayed with me ever since. It remains one of the purest examples of hospitality I’ve ever known. It had nothing to do with luxury. It had everything to do with generosity.
After several unforgettable days exploring Istanbul together, we boarded Singapore Airlines for the first time. We were seated in economy class, yet from the moment we stepped aboard, we were treated as though every passenger mattered equally. There were warm towels, sparkling wine before departure, individual television screens at every seat, something almost unimaginable in 1995, wonderful food, impeccable service, and flight attendants who somehow anticipated every need before we realized we had one. Somehow, our glasses were never less than half full.
When we landed in Singapore, the four of us looked at one another. “I don’t want to get off the plane,” I said. Judging by the looks on everyone else’s faces, I wasn’t the only one thinking it.
Only years later did I fully appreciate what made that flight so unforgettable. Until then, I had thought of hospitality as something you experienced in a hotel or restaurant. Singapore Airlines showed me that true hospitality can exist anywhere people genuinely care about creating an exceptional experience for others.
Max, and dinner chosen at sunrise
Later in our journey, another unforgettable lesson awaited me at our beachfront resort on the island of Koh Samui, Thailand. Every morning we were greeted by the restaurant manager, Max. Before we headed out to explore the island on scooters, play frisbee on the beach, or throw darts and drink ice cold beer at local bars, Max escorted us to an impressive display of seafood that had been caught just hours earlier.
He invited each of us to choose exactly what we wanted for dinner that evening, whether fish, lobster, prawns, or whatever looked most appealing. Then he asked how we wanted it prepared and which sauce we preferred before carefully tagging each selection with our names and room numbers.
By the time we returned that evening, our choices had become dinner, perfectly prepared, beautifully presented, and exactly as we had imagined them that morning.
Of course, the seafood was extraordinary, but what impressed me most was Max. He had transformed dinner into an experience that began twelve hours before we ever sat down. He invited us into the process, created anticipation, and understood that hospitality begins long before a guest sits down at the table. It begins by making people feel involved, welcome, and excited about what’s to come.
That lesson has stayed with me ever since.
By the time our four-month journey came to an end, I had fallen hopelessly in love with the world. I didn’t want to go home. I wanted to keep going.
Hospitality Becomes a Calling
When I returned home from that four-month journey, I wasn’t the same person who had left. The trip had changed me, not because of the places I had seen, but because of the people I had encountered: a maître d’ in Paris, the extraordinary generosity shown to two of my closest friends by a family on a Greek island, flight attendants who made an economy cabin feel first class, and a restaurant manager in Thailand who understood that anticipation is part of the dining experience.
Each had shown me a different expression of hospitality. Together, they taught me that hospitality isn’t a transaction. It’s an art. And I wanted to spend my life practicing it.
I returned to Hilton Head with a renewed appreciation for the hotel business. What had once seemed like a fun career suddenly felt like something much larger. Hotels were no longer places where travelers spent the night. The very best became stages upon which hundreds of talented cast members worked quietly behind the scenes to create unforgettable memories for complete strangers. Every arrival, greeting, recommendation, and thoughtful detail mattered.
As my career continued, I found myself paying closer attention. How did exceptional hoteliers welcome their guests? How did great concierges seem to know what someone needed before they asked? Why did certain restaurants leave guests talking about an evening for years while others were forgotten by the next morning?
I became a student of hospitality, not through textbooks, but through observation. I watched. I listened. I asked questions. Every exceptional experience became another lesson, every memorable hotel another classroom, and every inspiring colleague another teacher.
Long before I ever dreamed of becoming a luxury travel advisor, I was unknowingly preparing for it. Looking back now, I can see how those lessons, conversations, and experiences ultimately influenced the way I would care for my own clients.
Over the years, I would call many places home, including Arkansas, South Carolina, Georgia, Spain, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, California, Florida, and eventually Maine. Throughout every stage of my life, however, there was one place that remained constant: the shores of Lake Michigan. It has always been the place I return to, where I slow down, reflect, reconnect with family, and appreciate just how fortunate I’ve been.
One place, however, changed my life more than any other: the U.S. Virgin Islands. I arrived because of an opportunity and left with something infinitely more valuable. It was there that I met my wife Catherine.
From that moment on, I knew I would never travel through life alone.
The Journey Continues
Meeting Catherine remains the greatest gift the Virgin Islands ever gave me. From the beginning, we shared something that can’t be taught: curiosity.
Just as my parents had encouraged me to embrace the world with an open mind, Catherine possessed that same sense of wonder. She has always been eager to explore new places, meet new people, experience different cultures, and wander down a side street just to see what might be waiting around the next corner.
In November 2007, we crossed the Atlantic together for her first trip to Europe. We began in Andalucía, where I had lived in 1998, and this was my first time returning since then. Experiencing it again with Catherine made the return even more meaningful. I watched her discover the whitewashed villages, lively plazas, Moorish architecture, and relaxed rhythm of southern Spain. I also watched her discover that the green olives she had never particularly cared for back home tasted entirely different in Spain. To her surprise, she loved them and proceeded to devour them everywhere we went. Seeing her embrace Andalucía so completely reminded me of everything I had fallen in love with there years before.
From Spain we traveled north to France and into the heart of Champagne. Because of the relationships I had developed while representing Veuve Clicquot, Moët & Chandon, and other prestigious wines throughout the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, we were welcomed into experiences that few travelers ever have the opportunity to enjoy.
One afternoon, we arrived at Madame Veuve Clicquot’s twenty-nine-bedroom mansion in Reims. To our amazement, we were the only guests. Walking through rooms that had welcomed royalty, heads of state, and generations of distinguished visitors was extraordinary enough. Having the entire residence to ourselves made the experience almost surreal.
A few days later, on Thanksgiving Day, we were welcomed into Moët & Chandon’s private residence in Épernay for what remains one of the most memorable Thanksgiving dinners of our lives. Our hosts had no idea they were preparing an American Thanksgiving meal. Course after course was paired with exceptional Dom Pérignon vintages before the evening culminated with a bottle of Dom Pérignon Œnothèque, one of the rarest and most extraordinary Champagnes we had ever tasted.
It was a Thanksgiving we will never forget.
As unforgettable as those experiences were, they weren’t memorable because of the famous Champagne houses or extraordinary wines. They were memorable because they were shared.
Over the years, Catherine and I have continued exploring the world together, discovering that the greatest luxury has never been a five-star hotel, an acclaimed restaurant, or a rare bottle of wine. It is sharing those moments with someone you love.
Looking back over my life, I can see that every chapter prepared me for the next. My parents taught me curiosity, confidence, kindness, and to live by the Golden Rule. The world taught me hospitality, my career taught me service, travel taught me perspective, and Catherine has reminded me that the greatest journeys are the ones shared together.
Those lessons continue to influence not only the way I travel, but also the way I care for every client I have the privilege of serving.
“The journey, after all, is never just about where we go. It’s about who we become along the way.”

Chapter Ten
Behind the Curtain
Behind the Curtain
Most hotel guests never see what happens behind the scenes.
Hidden behind doors marked “Employees Only” is an entirely different world: a maze of hallways connecting kitchens, housekeeping, engineering, security, accounting, human resources, loading docks, laundry facilities, and executive offices. It’s where thousands of details come together long before the first guest checks in or the first meal is served.
When I entered the hotel business at twenty-four, I immediately felt at home.
After spending my first years out of college analyzing commercial loans from behind a desk at a bank in Little Rock, I had finally found a profession that allowed my personality to flourish. Hospitality gave me the freedom to build relationships, solve problems, and create experiences that people would remember long after they returned home.
Every morning, I entered through the employee entrance, passed through security, and made my way through those back hallways toward the lobby. Along the way, I’d greet teammates from every department with a smile, a handshake, or a high five. Bell staff, the front desk, housekeeping, engineering, the kitchens, the grounds crew, accounting, human resources, and the executive offices. It never mattered what someone’s title happened to be. Everyone deserved the same smile, respect, and appreciation. We were all working toward the same goal.
I wanted every person I encountered to feel my enthusiasm because I genuinely believed we were about to create something special together. Enthusiasm has a way of spreading, and I hoped our guests would ultimately feel it too.
Eventually, I’d arrive at the employee doorway leading into the lobby. There was always a brief moment before stepping through it. It felt like a performer waiting in the wings before walking on stage. On the other side of that door were hundreds of guests whose vacations, anniversaries, honeymoons, business trips, family reunions, and celebrations had brought them to our hotel.
Before pushing open that door, I’d pause for just a moment and ask myself,
“Whose stay can I make a difference in today?”
Today, I no longer welcome guests into a hotel. Instead, I have the privilege of helping clients explore the world. My office looks different, and my responsibilities have changed, but I still approach each day much as I did when I stood behind that employee door. I think about the people I’m serving, what matters to them, and what I can do behind the scenes to make their experience better.
The hotels have changed, the destinations have changed, and my role has changed. But one thing never has.
It’s still about people.

Chapter Eleven
Where Will Your Curiosity Take You
Where Will Your Curiosity Take You
Travel begins with curiosity.
Sometimes it is a destination you have dreamed about for years. Sometimes it is an experience you never knew existed until someone placed the idea in front of you. And sometimes the most memorable journeys begin with nothing more than a simple question:
Where should we go next?
There is no single definition of an extraordinary trip. It might mean disappearing to a private island for a week, exploring one of the world’s great cities, sailing into tiny Mediterranean harbors, sleeping beneath canvas in the Serengeti, crossing Southeast Asia aboard a legendary train, or venturing to the very edge of the Earth.
Here are just a few places your curiosity might take you.
Québec City, Canada
Awaken at Auberge Saint-Antoine in Québec City, where mornings begin with delicate, butter-rich croissants, dark maple pastries, and steaming bowls of café au lait. Outside, cobblestone streets, centuries-old stone buildings, intimate bistros, and the sound of French conversations drifting from neighborhood cafés create the feeling that you have crossed the Atlantic rather than simply crossed the Canadian border.
Before long, you’ll wonder whether Europe was ever as far away as you thought.
Augusta, Georgia: The Masters
Experience one of the most storied traditions in sport at the Masters Tournament in Augusta, where immaculate fairways, towering Georgia pines, blooming azaleas, and the world’s finest golfers come together each spring at legendary Augusta National.
Follow the leaders through Amen Corner. Hear the roar ripple through the trees when something extraordinary happens on the back nine. And embrace traditions that are every bit as much a part of the Masters as the golf itself: an iconic pimento cheese sandwich wrapped in its unmistakable green wrapper, perhaps accompanied by a refreshing Azalea cocktail as you take in one of the most beautiful settings in sport.
Enjoy premium Southern hospitality away from the course before returning to witness the drama unfold on golf’s most famous stage.
Coveted tournament access, exceptional accommodations, private transportation, and thoughtful details surrounding the event come together to transform a bucket-list sporting occasion into an unforgettable travel experience.
Because sometimes the destination isn’t a place at all. It’s the competition you’ve always dreamed of experiencing in person.
Jumby Bay Island, Antigua
Spend an unhurried week at Jumby Bay Island, where your days are measured not by a clock but by the rhythm of the Caribbean Sea.
Barefoot walks along powder-white beaches. A gentle breeze rustling through the palms. The soft sound of waves rolling ashore. Not a care in the world.
Fresh Caribbean lobster grilled over an open flame and served with drawn butter and charred citrus. Conch ceviche brightened with lime, cilantro, and ripe mango. A perfectly chilled rum punch beside your private pool.
As the sun melts into the horizon, a glass of Champagne reminds you that sometimes the greatest luxury is having nowhere you need to be.
Norway: Oslo to the Fjords
Begin in Oslo, exploring its striking architecture, fascinating museums, waterfront neighborhoods, and vibrant Nordic cuisine before leaving the city behind for the dramatic Norwegian fjords.
Journey north and west through a landscape of snowcapped mountains, cascading waterfalls, and tiny villages before arriving at Union Øye, a storied 1891 hotel tucked between the fjords and the Sunnmøre Alps, where royalty, writers, composers, and explorers have sought refuge for more than a century.
Spend your days cruising the fjords and hiking beneath towering peaks before returning to smoked Norwegian salmon, artisanal regional cheeses, freshly baked bread, handpicked berries, and dishes prepared with ingredients caught, grown, and raised in the surrounding region.
In Norway, the journey from sophisticated city to breathtaking wilderness is surprisingly short, yet it can feel a world away.
Rome, the Mediterranean & Athens
Begin with several unforgettable nights at Hotel de la Ville in Rome, where church bells echo across the rooftops as the city slowly awakens.
Then sail aboard Explora Journeys through the Mediterranean before lingering at Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens.
Leisurely seaside lunches of charcoal-grilled octopus, vine-ripened Santorini tomatoes, creamy feta drizzled with peppery Greek olive oil, warm grilled sourdough, and a perfectly chilled glass of Assyrtiko become the perfect finale as fishing boats gently sway in the harbor and glasses clink beneath the afternoon sun.
The finest cruise experiences don’t begin at embarkation or end at disembarkation. They unfold through the places that frame the voyage itself.
Turkey’s Turquoise Coast
Cruise aboard your private traditional wooden gulet along Turkey’s spectacular Turquoise Coast, dropping anchor in secluded coves and swimming in crystalline water.
Linger over whole Mediterranean sea bass grilled over charcoal and finished with fragrant local olive oil, fresh lemon, flaky sea salt, smoky eggplant purée, vine leaves filled with aromatic herbs and rice, and warm pistachio baklava accompanied by rich Turkish coffee before returning to Amanruya overlooking the Aegean.
Here, the best days are measured not by the hour, but by the next secluded cove waiting just beyond the horizon.
Tanzania
Fall asleep beneath canvas at Singita Sabora Tented Camp in Tanzania, where beautifully designed tented suites and uninterrupted views across the Serengeti redefine every expectation of a luxury safari.
Spend your days on safari across the vast plains before evenings beneath a canopy of stars with rosemary-crusted rack of lamb, slow-roasted root vegetables, exceptional South African wines, and the sounds of the African night drifting across the Serengeti.
Long after you’ve returned home, you’ll find yourself listening for Africa once again.
India
Awaken to the fragrance of cardamom and masala chai before wandering through Jaipur’s colorful bazaars or marveling at the Taj Mahal bathed in the soft light of sunrise.
Then continue to Udaipur, where Taj Lake Palace appears to float like a white-marble mirage on Lake Pichola.
Savor fragrant curries, freshly baked naan, and regional cuisine reflecting centuries of culinary tradition while private guides lead you through palaces, forts, temples, bazaars, and neighborhoods that reveal layer upon layer of Indian history and culture.
India doesn’t simply give you places to see. It surrounds you with stories.
Singapore & Malaysia by Rail
Begin amid the energy, architecture, and extraordinary cuisine of Singapore before stepping aboard the Eastern & Oriental Express, A Belmond Train for a glamorous journey through Malaysia.
Watch jungle, rice fields, and small villages unfold beyond your window from the Observation Car. Step off to discover the UNESCO-listed streets and food culture of George Town in Penang, then return aboard and retreat to the Dior Spa as Malaysia slips quietly past the windows.
Later, dress for cocktails and dinner featuring Chef André Chiang’s contemporary interpretations of Southeast Asian flavors, perhaps Penang duck curry, Laksa Bouillabaisse, or Jungle Spices Cacao Ganache.
Sometimes how you get there becomes part of the destination itself.
New Zealand to Antarctica
Board PONANT’s Le Soléal in New Zealand for an expedition through the Subantarctic region and onward to Antarctica’s remote Ross Sea.
Towering icebergs, breaching whales, vast penguin colonies, and landscapes almost untouched by humankind become part of your everyday surroundings.
After days spent exploring this remote wilderness, return aboard each evening for French-inspired cuisine, perhaps seared scallops, tender beef with seasonal vegetables and truffled jus, followed by a rich Valrhona dark chocolate dessert and a glass of fine wine, an elegant contrast to the wild landscapes just beyond the ship.
Outside, the profound silence is broken only by the distant calls of penguins and the thunderous crack of ancient glaciers calving into the sea.
Few places leave you feeling so humbled by the beauty and scale of our planet.
The Possibilities Are Yours
These are only examples.
Your journey may take you somewhere entirely different. Perhaps it is a destination you’ve been dreaming about for decades. Perhaps it begins with a hotel, ship, train, or experience that captures your imagination. Or perhaps you don’t know where you want to go at all. You simply know how you want to feel when you get there.
That is where the conversation begins.
No matter where your travels take you, my responsibility is to ensure every recommendation, every introduction, and every experience reflects who you are, what inspires you, and the memories you hope to create.
Luxury, to me, has never been about extravagance alone.
It is about thoughtful details, meaningful experiences, trusted relationships, and feeling genuinely cared for from the moment you begin dreaming until long after you return home.
Every recommendation I make begins with one simple question:
“Is this right for my client?”
That question guides every itinerary I design, every recommendation I make, and every relationship I cultivate around the world on behalf of my clients.

It's Been My Pleasure
It’s Been My Pleasure
If you’ve made it this far, I hope these pages have given you a genuine sense of who I am, how I work, and the philosophy of hospitality that guides the way I care for my clients.
When considering your next adventure, I’d love the opportunity to learn more about you, understand what you’re envisioning, answer your questions, and begin creating an experience thoughtfully designed around you.
Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, reconnecting with family, exploring a destination you’ve dreamed about for years, or discovering somewhere entirely unexpected, I would be honored to play a part in making your travels extraordinary.
